Making the Most of Your High School Curriculum

The Southern Maine Tech Prep Consortium suggests the following as a way to get a head start on higher education:

Tech Prep (4+2+2) - Students in high school take academic and technical courses that prepare them for two-year technical colleges and technical careers.  Some high school Tech Prep courses are articulated, meaning that students who earn a grade B or better can earn technical college credit while they are still in high school.

Early Start – High school juniors and seniors attend classes at local technical colleges and universities, earning high school and college credit simultaneously.

College in High School - Students take college courses in their school and earn high school and college credit (Example: calculus)

Advanced Placement - Courses in high school that prepare students to take tests granting credit at the college level to high-scoring students (Example: AP English)

Pre-Apprenticeship- Provides paid employment to high school juniors and seniors in jobs that lead to registered apprenticeships and technical college.

Maine Career Advantage - Provides part-time paid work in combination with high school to seniors.  Upon successful completion of the high school component, the student has earned tuition for technical college paid by the employer.
