Presenting Your Portfolio for College Credit
People with lifelong learning experience may have an
opportunity to present a portfolio to the admissions office to determine whether
or not earn college credit may be earned for past experience.
Usually there is a limit to the number of credits you may be awarded.
Typically, the credit will be award toward a degree in a career field
that matches your experience. For
example, someone who has been performing basic accounting tasks may be able to
earn credit toward an accounting degree and have the introductory courses
waived.
Tips for organizing your portfolio
- Review
your current portfolio (see page x )
- Identify
components that relate to a specific job skill
- Review
the course catalog at the institution you want to attend and identify
courses that match your hands on experience
- Organize
your portfolio by your skills, ideally matching the course outlines
- Meet
with the admissions counselor and present a copy of your portfolio.
You should plan to leave this copy so try not to include originals.
- Ask
for a decision-making timeline. You
will want to know if certain courses will be waived prior to course
registration.
