We define career as the totality of experiences in one's life, be that paid work, leisure activities, volunteer work or service, learning, retirement, parenting or ... whatever!

We propose that everyone has a career. Career is the "big picture" look at your experiences, while your job is the "snapshot" of your current career position.

We believe that career change has three components:

  • Exploration: learning about different jobs;
  • Assessment: learning about yourself;
  • Planning: developing the strategies to use that information in making a career choice or change.

Another typical definition of career is the sum total, thus far, of all the paid work experiences of your life; a chronological list of all the jobs you have held up to now. At Promising Futures, we want you to start thinking about your career by asking yourself questions about where you have been, where you are, and where you want to go.
