We tend to think of stress as a bad thing in our lives, when it actually has a good side. Stress can be divided into two categories: Good stress, which is called Eustress and bad stress, which is called Distress.

Good stress, or, Eustress, is the force that gets you out of bed in the morning to get ready for school, work, or whatever activities await you; it is what keeps you going in a marathon when you think that you can't run another foot; it is the deadline that prompts you to get your car registered or pay your mortgage. It is often pleasurable, and without it, we might become giant blobs of DNA that never attempt to maximize our physical, emotional and intellectual potential. |

Distress is the stuff that is talked about, written about and for which an entire industry has arisen to address. Distress is seen as aversive, severe, prolonged and uncontrollable |
| Webster's Dictionary defines stress as …"a constraining force or influence; a physical, chemical or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation. |
