There is probably no better way readily to make such discriminations than by using what are known as Value Line "Timeliness" ratings. Let us take a look at these ratings for a few moments:

Value Line covers a universe of about 1700 different common stocks. To each of these, at any given time, it assigns a rating of #1, #2, #3, #4, or #5. A #1 or a #2 indicates that a stock is expected to outperform the market over the coming year; a #4 or #5 indicates that it is expected to underperform the market over the coming year; and a #3 indicates that the stock is expected approximately to track the market over the coming year. |

Value Line's timeliness ratings have been extremely successful over the past 35 years, and so the service has become the most widely used by investors of all investment services. I encourage you to defer to these ratings when assembling and monitoring your own common stock portfolio. |
